Opentrack Events in the Rain

Most opentrack events go on as scheduled rain or shine. The organizer has paid for the track and cannot just back out because mother nature pulled a fast one. However, there is no need to fear a track day in the rain. Do you drive on the highway in the rain? Of course you do. Then why couldn't you run a track event in the rain? Admittedly, it is not as enjoyable when the track is wet. But it is an excellent opportunity to develop your smooth driving skills. Opentracking in the rain can be one of the best methods to teach smooth car control. Throttle, braking and steering inputs must be done progressively with no sudden inputs.

One piece of advice, when in the wet stuff........"stay off the dry line"! Some tracks dry line have so much rubber in the apex that it can become very slippery. Do not approach a rain event to practice the line. The line is a bad place to be when the track surface is wet. Most dry lines are very slippery when wet. Plus, the line does not always look the same with the slower rain event speeds.

Use the rain event to practice being smooth with all the car inputs. Use the rain event to develop your awareness of the vehicles communication methods. What do your hands and butt feel from the car? Listen to the motor. You can often here the rpm elevation before feeling the cars tires have lost grip. Developing this sense of feel in the rain will pay big dividends when the track dries out and the speeds go up!

Drive the rain event. Just do so at the speed that is safe and comfortable for you. Use the day to learn car control and leave the "need for speed" on hold for another day. Opentracking in the rain will make you faster for your next dry event and it will make you a safer driver on the open highways. Good luck!
