What is Speed? by: Jeff Carlson, '85 Toyota MR2 jmcgliss@hotmail.com Posted 06/17/01 Just wanted to share an experience I am still buzzed about. While our Mustang Cobra is in the shop, I took my '85 MR2 to Gingerman Raceway in Michigan this week for a make-up date with TrackTime. After several years of high speed fun at Road America with the V8 I was apprehensive that the 1.6 litre MR2 would get smoked. But man did I have a blast! The run groups were small so track time was abundant. Gingerman's corners are a mix of classy and wacky - you are always pulling g's and looking for ways to not scrub off speed. I had to work hard, shifting often and heel-toe to hold the motor between 6000 - 7800 rpm. This is the JDM 20-valve transplant with the supercharged MR2 bottom end and it sounds great at high rpms. My run group was small, but I went for it so I could lap a beautiful 928 GTS in every session. Can you tell I like this tossing this car around again? The experience of really having to work a car and not scrub off speed, while grinning from the g's and corner-worker salutes made for a great day in an otherwise 'slow' car. Dang, wish they had put me in the 'A' group with the new Ferrari 355 F1 owner! Jeff Carlson '96 Mystic Cobra 32v '85 MR2 20v
